A new monument dedicated to the abolition of slavery was dedicated in Richmond, Virginia on Wednesday, CNN reports. The 12 foot tall bronze statue depicts a Black Virginian family celebrating their liberation from being treated like farm animals by the ideological forebears (and often the actual ancestors) of members of the modern Republican Party. The site of the new Emancipation and Freedom Monument is roughly two miles away from where the Robert E Lee participation trophy stood until recently. Why the new monument was not placed at former Lee site or what the city’s plans are for it was not elaborated upon in CNN’s article, so we’ll keep an eye out for any updates. The Lee statue itself was scrapped and its parts mothballed at a Virginia women’s prison.
