At a biennial meeting of Michigan Republicans, former Trump Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos offered a lightly veiled criticism of Donald Trump’s leadership of the GOP, saying the Party risks becoming a cult of personality, the Detroit Free Press reports.
DeVos lamented that “principles have been overtaken by personalities” in modern politics, saying “[O]urs is not a movement dependent on any one person. Politics now are so often about people, not the policies that impact lives directly.”
In her address to Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference also commented that she “didn’t have to live under the thumb of that woman from Michigan,” referring to Democratic Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, during the pandemic.
