- The goal of the Texas abortion law is ostensibly to eliminate abortion. The tactic anti-choice activists in Texas are using is not to make abortions illegal; it’s to drive the abortion clinics out of business by forcing patients to out-of-state providers so the clinics in Texas close due to lack of business. No customers = No providers. No providers = no abortions. The law doesn’t have to be upheld by SCOTUS; it just needs to be in effect long enough to drain the clinics’ resources.
- Every time Joel Greenberg delays his sentencing because he’s cooperating with investigators, Matt Gaetz’s sphincter tightens a little more.
- One of the many things I like about renewable energy is that there will be no such thing as a pipeline leak, and if there is, it would be just a breezy bouquet of sunshine and rainbows.
- Biden’s job numbers are averaging 602,000 per month. Two months worth is the net number of jobs created by George W. Bush. Five times that is the number of jobs lost during the Trump administration.
- Republicans balking on raising the debt ceiling means they’ve completely taken on Trumpism: now the GOP won’t pay bills they accrued.
- Mitch McConnell accepting a deal that would restart the debt limit panic in about 50 days may be because he doesn’t want GOP obstinance to be an issue in the Virginia governor’s race. But he wants “Dem spending” to be the issue of 2022. Look for the next deal to be for nine months, through September 2022, so it can be the top story on Fox through the midterms.
- It takes a surprising amount of effort to be “random.”
- Pat Robertson is retiring from his television show. Joel Osteen is in the wings ready to take his
donors place.
- I wasn’t really impacted by Facebook and Instagram going offline this week. It’s football season. I’m refreshing betting odds, injury reports and experts’ picks.
- Subpoenas out of the House J6 committee are coming at a nice pace, and they’re likely to be bigger as time goes on.
- Three political podcasts I love: Lawfare, #SistersInLaw, The Bob Cesca Show. Three non-political ones: StarTalk with Neil deGrasse Tyson, On The Media, Clear+Vivid with Alan Alda. And there’s a difference between a radio show and a podcast. A recording of a radio show isn’t a podcast. (My favorite one of those: Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me.)
- Ice cream truck treats, in order: the Chocolate Eclair Bar, the red-white-and-blue Rocket Pop, the Creamsicle, the Italian Ice with the gumball at the bottom. And regardless of your age, if you don’t search for change when you hear that song, your soul is dead.
- I’m looking forward to Jon Stewart coming back in front of the camera. He’s always been a great interviewer, and he has a sense of what matters to viewers. Plus, y’know, the humor has always been good.
