Random thoughts Friday, Volume XL

  • Recent economic reports are breaking favorably toward a strong economy going into 2022.  Job creation continues to increase.  Workers are able to change jobs so they’re not stuck, unhappy, in a go-nowhere position.  Wages are increasing.  Consumer spending is steady.  The economy may be strong and stable, but Democrats need to capitalize on the messaging about the economy to make it work for them in 2022.  Negative messaging is a strength of conservatives/Trumpians.
  • Workers at John Deere and Kellogg strike.  Nurses picketing for workplace safety.  People leaving jobs because they can get better positions at more pay.  This is what it looks like when an American middle class starts thriving.
  • Women in Afghanistan are praying for the health and safety of women in Texas.
  • Texas has passed laws that require biblical concepts be taught as science.  It requires women to be incubators against their wills for any man who can force himself on them.  It will submit girls to genital inspection.  Trans people will be shunned.  And the Holocaust must be placed in a positive light. It’s one dress code away from changing its name to end in “-stan.”
  • Voluntarily announcing to a roomful of people “I’m not into golden showers” means you’re definitely into golden showers.  It’s like saying, “I’m not a racist, but….”
  • Trump sits for a video deposition next week.  Will he demand pre-approval for the script and lighting, or will he improvise the entire thing?
  • In every movie that will be made about MAGA, Bruce McGill, the actor who played Daniel Simpson “D-Day” Day in Animal House, must portray Steve Bannon.  I think he’ll be very good in the scene where Bannon gets hauled off to jail for contempt of Congress.
  • John Mayer is James Taylor v. 2.0.
  • The way Canadians say “sorry” is a national treasure.  (Welcome, hockey season!)
  • The circulating conspiracy theory that Southwest flights were canceled because of a silent, unpublicized, unsanctioned work stoppage due to vaccine mandates–and that it wasn’t poor management and outdated technology at the airline, like anyone who’s ever taken an airline flight can understand–demonstrates Occam’s Razor cannot be applied by conservatives.
  • Scrappy Doo is an abomination.  He is to animation what Curley Joe is to Stooges.  And what Oliver is to Bradies.
  • Pasta dishes I can make at home for Mrs. Jack and me:  pasta puttanesca, spinach lasagna, baked macaroni and cheese, chicken piccata. Of course, a good old fashioned tomato sauce is satisfying, but every pot is different.  If you count rice noodles as pasta (I don’t), add chicken pho to the list.
  • Today, October 15th, is National Grouch Day.  Join me in celebrating.  You don’t even have to live in a garbage can.
