The small, landlocked African country of Burkina Faso appears to still be experiencing a military coup, with gunshots heard around the residence of President Roch Marc Christian Kabore, even though government officials said that the unrest had been put down, the Associated Press reports.
Rebelling military forces reportedly seized a number of barracks at an installation in the outer reaches of the nation, but they had been quickly been retaken. However, calls to media outlets from people involved in the coup say that heavy fighting has continued.
Witnesses heard continued gunfire around Kabore’s official residence in Ouagadougou. Government officials deny Kabore has has been taken by the rebellious soldiers, saying that the gunfire was “acts of discontent by soldiers.”
