With pressure mounting from sponsors, protestors and even football fans, the Washington NFL franchise announced this morning that “the team will undergo a thorough review of the team’s name,” according to a USA Today report.
Team owner Daniel Snyder and team management has faced increased opposition to the team mascot, the “Redskins,” for its inherent racism as an insult to Native Americans.
Yesterday, FedEx–the title sponsor of the team’s stadium–announced that it asked Snyder and the other owners to change the team’s name. Other team sponsors, including Pepsi and Nike, have received pressure from major shareholders and investors to sever ties to the team until the name is changed.
