A study commissioned by the State of Connecticut found that for-profit nursing homes had 60% higher coronavirus case and fatality rates than nonprofit facilities, Reuters reports.
The state had commissioned the report to investigate why nursing homes had overall higher fatalities, with three-quarters of the fatalities in Connecticut occuring in assisted living or senior living facilities.
Princeton, New Jersey-based research firm Mathematica Policy Research did not make any conclusions why the for-profit sites had more cases and fatalities than nonprofit locations.
One finding of the study was that the state did not proactively act to prevent the spread of the virus; instead of aggressively using state resources, the state and the assisted-living facilities followed less stringent federal guidelines.
Officials in Connecticut say they hope the findings of the study help states that are experiencing spikes in coronavirus cases now, given that Connecticut has few new cases reported daily after finally controlling the spread of the virus.
