Nine people, including six collegiate golfers and their coach, were killed in a head-on collision involving the van carrying the golfers and a pickup truck that strayed into the oncoming lane, the New York Times reports.
The students, from the University of the Southwest, a private Christian college in Hobbs, New Mexico, had finished a tournament in Midland, Texas and were making the two hour drive back to Hobbs when the pickup hit them head-on, causing both vehicles to burst into flames.
The driver and passenger in the pickup truck died. Two other members of the Hobbs team survived and were taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
