Dr Anthony Fauci, the 81-year-old director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, hinted he’s looking to retire in a podcast interview, the New York Post reports. “I have said that I would stay in what I’m doing until we get out of the pandemic phase, and I think we might be there already,” Fauci told ABC News’s “Start Here” podcast. “I can’t stay at this job forever. Unless my staff is going to find me slumped over my desk one day. I’d rather not do that.”
A Fauci retirement would be a gut punch to so much Republican campaign rhetoric ahead of the November midterms as dozens upon dozens of candidates have promised revenge against the government healthcare bureaucrat for doing his job while loser former President Trump fucked it up in virtually every single way imaginable. That their precious, golden scapegoat is in his 80s certainly would not help with the “He’s just escaping accountability” line they’ll undoubtedly use.
