Russian President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday that the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which he characterizes as a mission to de-Nazify Ukraine and protect women and children, is going exactly as planned, the Associated Press reports.
Although Russia’s clear initial objective of capturing the capital city of Kyiv has fallen short, Putin claims the military plans are on schedule. He said the invasion, which started at the end of February, would continue until all strategic goals of the invasion are met.
Russian military advances around Ukraine have been stymied by fierce resistance by the Ukrainian military and civilian militias who have used weapons provided by the United States and western European allies to destroy Russian columns entering the country. An estimated 7,000 to 15,000 Russian troops have been killed, according to analysts.
In some areas, Russian units have been forced to withdraw due to exhausted and decimated troops. Analysts believe Russia is regrouping for a major offensive in the eastern part of Ukraine, the regions Putin recognized as independent territories, where his troops have more of a foothold.
