A three-judge panel from the Richmond, Virginia-based Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals has sided with a transgender student, upholding his right to choice which bathroom in his high school he chooses to use, Reuters reports via MSN.
The Court ruled that Gavin Grimm, now a college student, should have been given the right to self-identify his gender in selecting which restroom he would use at the Gloucester County high school he attended, citing laws barring sex discrimination in education.
The ruling upholds a lower court judgement from 2019.
The Trump Administration rescinded rights for transgender students to choose how they should be identified in classrooms, countering a policy set up by the Obama Administration. These court rulings reaffirm the civil rights of these students, corresponding with previous Obama Administration guidelines.
