Random thoughts Friday, Volume LXXVIII

  • At one point, the Supreme Court and the Secret Service ranked at or near the top of the most revered and trusted federal institutions.  How times have changed.
  • Under Alabama’s law granting personhood to a fertilized egg, Alabama now becomes the worst jurisdiction in the world for official fetal mortality rates at 319 per thousand, topping Afghanistan’s 109 per thousand rate.  (Roughly one-third of all fertilized eggs are passed naturally, so obviously Alabama will proceed to indict those people who discharged fertilized embryos, right?)
  • I’m appalled that the GOP used the rape and ensuing pregnancy of a 10-year-old to try to show their opposition to Joe Biden.  To them, everything is a prop in their performance art.
  • Conservatives are upset that a bunch of people unrelated to Brett Kavanagh demonstrated their anger with him and forced him to use a back alley to extricate him from a situation he didn’t want to be in.
  • Will the Kraken get a Diet Dr. Pepper commercial?  Seriously, if that had been shown a little closer to the NFL season, it would have been a great parody Super Bowl commercial.  So she cannot financially benefit from her malfeasance, Powell’s role should be given to an actor.  I nominate Nathan Lane.
  • Funny how you don’t hear a single witness whose interviews were shown during the January 6th Committee hearings say their responses were taken out of context.  Not one.
  • About 85% of House Republicans voted against a bill that would establish an Amber alert-style system to warn people about active shooters in their vicinity because they don’t want to demonize the guns shooters are using to kill people.
  • Kavanaugh chose to be a SCOTUS justice.  He chose to sign on to an unpopular, legally-questionable decision that goes against the stated will of the people.  He wants to do this without consequence to his private life, and he doesn’t want to accept any responsibility for his actions.  He expects women to be quiet and obedient.  He doesn’t think that he holds any responsibility or that he merits any consequence for his actions, much like the men who impregnate the women who need to seek an abortion.  Squee and Toobin are smiling.
  • In reality, the only way to save the Texas power grid in its current form is to encourage people to install solar panels and other generated-at-home power (like geothermal and even home wind turbines in more rural areas).  To take the strain off the power grid, Texans need tens of thousands of homes and businesses to become their own power generators.  But Abbott will never acknowledge that.
  • At any moment, more than one million people are flying above the earth aboard an aircraft.
  • If you stop thinking about the shows that investigate haunted houses, Bigfoot and the like as documentaries and start thinking about them as televised campfire stories, they make more sense.
  • Conservatives:  We are pro-life!  Also conservatives:  We demand women die because they have an unviable “baby” stuck in their Fallopian tubes.
  • Biden is reportedly pushing Democrats to immediately pass legislation to lower prescription drug prices and healthcare costs.  While it’s not the full package liberals had hoped for, it’s a great move to demonstrate Democrats are working for all Americans’ benefit, unlike the previous administration whose policies were targeted at specific groups that could benefit Trump.
  • Peter Navarro, who has a net worth of $5 million, is holding fundraisers to raise the $1 million he believes he’ll need for his legal defense for trying to overthrow the Constitution.  Is there a better example of a grift than a multimillionaire who won’t spend his own money when he knows suckers will fund his lifestyle?
  • I’m a committed space nerd.  What we saw from the Webb telescope is just the beginning.  Its impact on science will last centuries, and it may help locate the first planet humans will visit outside our solar system
  • Living without air conditioning for the last 10 days–our 20-year-old unit finally gasped its last breath–reminded me that shade and airflow are as important to comfort as air temperature.
  • We’re getting our new AC unit Tuesday.  Unlike Peter Navarro, we won’t plead for someone else to pay for it
  • My favorite sources for news–not because they are necessarily authoritative, but because I always learn something:  Rachel Maddow, Stephanie Miller, and the New York Times.  The one I miss was the Buzz Burbank podcast since he retired about two years ago.
  • The Semiquincentennial–that is, the 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence–is in 2026.  I hope it generates some unity in the US–if we can make it there.
