According to data from the COVID Tracking Project, the United States surpassed 1,000 deaths due to the coronavirus for the fifth consecutive day. The nation also recorded more than 40,000 daily new cases for each day over that span.
Texas, Florida and Georgia were the only states reporting more than 100 deaths Saturday, with Texas, California and Florida reporting more than 3,000 cases, according to worldometers.info. Of the top ten states in new infections, seven of them voted for Trump in 2016.
South Dakota, which hosted the Sturgis motorcycle rally two weeks ago, is also currently a hot spot with its 7-day running average of new cases nearly tripling since August 10th.
