All Presidential library foundations issue joint statement stressing necessity to protect American democracy

The foundations that manage the thirteen Presidential Libraries for former presidents–from Herbert Hoover through Barack Obama–issued a historic joint statement calling on Americans to unite, see past our differences, and work toward a more stable nation.

Noting the US role as not just an economic leader but as a beacon of democracy around the world, the statement notes that apparent weakness in the US political system–caused by Republicans undermining the foundations of American democracy, although the letter does not specifically call out the current GOP campaign to sow doubt in elections–give rise to outside threats from those looking to topple democracies worldwide.

“Americans have a strong interest in supporting democratic movements and respect for human rights around the world because free societies elsewhere contribute to our own security and prosperity here at home,” it reads. “But that interest is undermined when others see our own house in disarray. The world will not wait for us to address our problems, so we must both continue to strive toward a more perfect union and help those abroad looking for U.S. leadership.”

Trump DC grand jury meeting again

The federal grand jury that handed down the four count indictment of disgraced former President Trump over his post-2020 election coup attempt has been spotted meeting again at the courthouse on Friday, CNN reports on another indication that Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith isn’t done yet and that his dipshit co-conspirators ought to be afraid. Very afraid.

Chris Pincher finally resigns from British Parliament

British Conservative MP Chris Pincher, whose drunken, Matt Schlapp-like habit of groping other men led directly to the downfall of Prime Minister Boris Johnson last year, finally resigned his seat in Parliament on Thursday, the BBC reports in a final epilogue to the Pinchygate scandal.

The open seat triggers a by-election and another headache Prime Minister Rishi Sunak doesn’t need right now as the Tories slide toward an absolute fucking nightmare of a general election at some point next year with their economy in the shitter and inflation still running rampant.

Eastman refuses question about Grassley’s plan for January 6

Taking the stand in his still-ongoing California disbarment trial on Wednesday, fascist MAGA lawyer John Eastman asserted attorney client privilege when an investigator asked specifically if he had any discussions with Trump or his minions about one still-murky subplot in Congressional GOP plans to object to the electoral college certification of Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election:

Why the hell did Old Man Senator Charles Grassley announce on January 5th, 2021 that he was going to preside over the session rather than Vice President Mike Pence, only to almost immediately “clarify” that Grassley, as the Senate President Pro Tempore, was just saying it in case Pence was unavailable? Politico reports that Eastman only deepened the mystery by telling the Bar investigator that the client he’s asserting privilege for is none other than Inmate P01135809 himself.

Both Eastman and fellow co-conspirator Kenny Chesebro had looked into getting Grassley in the role, and Politico notes it’s not so extraordinary for the President Pro Tempore to fill-in for the Vice President on Electoral College vote day, having happened several times in history. Still for Grassley to have asserted that he was going to be the one running the show only to quickly walk it back and then for Eastman to dodge potentially further incriminating himself and his fat former client speaks to another fresh line of criminal liability for Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith to pursue if (more likely when) he drops the hammer on Eastman. For his part Grassley was not among the Republican Senators who voted to object to certifying before or after the MAGA insurrection disrupted the session nor does it appear he planned to do so even as he claimed he would preside.

Majority believe Joe Biden was involved in Hunter’s schemes: poll

A new CNN/SSRS survey finds that 61 percent of respondents believe that Joe Biden had some level of involvement in Hunter Biden’s business schemes while Joe was Vice President while 38 percent say he was not involved at all. Among the 60 percent who say he was involved, 42 percent say he acted illegally and 18 percent say it was unethical but not illegal. That last one percent is not a rounding error as those repondents said he did nothing illegal nor unethical despite being involved.

On the question of whether Joe Biden has acted inappropriately in regard to the investigations into Hunter, 55 percent said yes while 44 percent said no. CNN’s write-up of the poll includes no quotes from individual respondents to explain what makes them believe Joe acted inappropriately.

Lindsey and Jared trying to sell Trump on Biden Saudi-Israel deal

Saudi agent Jared Kushner and confirmed bachelor Senator Lindsey Graham have been feverishly working their 77 year-old toddler, fat former President Trump, pleading with him to at the very least keep his mouth shut if he can’t publicly affirmatively support the Saudi-Israeli peace deal President Biden is working on, trying to sell it as a natural extension of the “Abraham Accords” the Republicans hyped to no end during the last year of the Trump Administration, Axios reports.

“I told President Trump, listen, this is the natural extension of the Abraham Accords and if we can do it, let’s do it. It doesn’t matter how it gets done, on whose watch it gets done. It’d be a good thing for the stability of the Middle East and our own national security and President Trump deserves his fair share of credit,” said Lindsey, adding that it’s “the highest sign of flattery” for Biden to replicate Trump’s diplomatic strategy in the Middle East, a message he claims Donald appreciated.

So yeah, it’s only a matter of time before Trump has a public meltdown over Biden stealing his idea and claiming that he could do a much better one if reelected and he should’ve won a “Noble” Peace Prize for getting the other Arab-Israeli peace deals done and blah blah blah.

Biden refuses to agree to basic confinement conditions for potential plea deal for last remaining 9/11 detainees at Gitmo

President Joe Biden refused to agree to conditions relating to the confinement and treatment of the final five defendants connected to the September 11th attacks being held at Guantanamo Bay, shutting down a potential plea agreement, NBC News reports.

To secure guilty pleas which would result in life sentences, avoiding the death penalty, the prisoners wanted assurances that they would not be held in solitary confinement and that they would receive treatment for the mental and physical trauma they experienced while they were being tortured at the Cuban facility or at other locations.  Biden refused those and other demands.

The pre-trial hearings have been going on for more than a decade for the five men, which includes Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged “architect” of the 9/11 attacks.  Along with these five men, there are still 25 other prisoners being held at Gitmo.

Former Mexico City Mayor likely to become first woman president

Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the former mayor of Mexico City, has won the majority left-wing Moreno Party’s presidential nominee in the upcoming elections, virtually assuring her of becoming Mexico’s first female president, the Associated Press reports.

Sheinbaum won the election by double-digit margins over her nearest competitor, Foreign Affairs Secretary Marcelo Ebrard, in five Party votes.  She’ll take over for President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who is term-limited to one six-year stint.

Eastman lawyer: He didn’t try to obstruct Congressional proceedings, he intended to delay the vote

Asked straightforwardly if his client John Eastman did, indeed, intend to obstruct the official certification of the Electoral College vote, attorney Charles Burham responded less directly:

No, no, not at all.  His advice, as he said, to Vice President Pence was not to was not to impede the certification or somehow obstruct it or block it.  His advice, and he stated this many times before that interview, was simply to impose a short delay in the process to allow the state legislators to, legislatures who weren’t then in session to have one more look at the situation before reporting back to Congress, and then it would go back to Congress to make the ultimate decision.  That was his advice.  It remains his view today that that was appropriate.  It’s not obstruction.  It’s not impeding.  It’s not anything like that.

Nah.  Nothing like that.  It’s just fraudulently impeding Congress from doing its assigned task on the day dictated by law to obstruct the formal victory of the next president in the Electoral College so your favored politician could swoop in and steal the election.  Nothing like obstruction at all.

Hurricane Lee getting ready to politicize the weather

“At 500 PM AST (2100 UTC), the center of Hurricane Lee was located near latitude 14.9 North, longitude 46.4 West. Lee is moving toward the west-northwest near 14 mph (22 km/h), and this motion is expected to continue for the next few days with a slight reduction in forward speed over the weekend. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 75 mph (120 km/h) with higher gusts. Continued steady to rapid strengthening is forecast, and Lee is expected to become a major hurricane in a day or two. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles (30 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles (150 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 991 mb,” says a National Hurricane Center bulletin on something something it’ll be too soon to talk about climate change if it hits the East Coast at full strength.

Former state attorney asks Florida Supreme Court to review DeSantis’s order removing her from office

The former Orange-Osceola state attorney is asking the Florida Supreme Court to take up her case, alleging Republican Governor Ron DeSantis illegally removed her from her elected office, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

As a series of protests occurred across Florida in support of Monique Worrell, the ousted Orange-Osceola attorney, and former Hillsborough state attorney Andrew Warren, who was removed from office last year.  Both prosecutors were targeted by conservative stalwarts who claimed they weren’t prosecuting enough crimes amid accusations that they were corrupted by billionaire George Soros.

Atlanta police chief says Russians doxxed Trump grand jurors

In an affidavit filed in support of Fulton County, Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis’s motion to keep anonymous the names of the jurors who will decide if disgraced former President Trump and 19 of his co-conspirators are guilty of the many crimes listed in the sprawling RICO indictment handed down by a grand jury for their crimes against American democracy last month, Atlanta Police Department Chief Darin Schierbaum writes that those grand jurors (who also returned a massive RICO indictment against Antifa activists on Tuesday) – whose names were by law listed in the indictment – and DA Willis – had their home addresses posted on a Russian-owned website.

“In August 2023, I became aware that the identities of members of one of the Fulton County Grand Juries serving for the July-August term of court had been listed on a website known to be a location where information for ‘doxing’ people is listed. Those listings called for harassment and violence against the grand jurors. I was able to determine that members of the Fulton County Grand Jury who returned a true bill of indictment against 19 people, including Defendant Donald J Trump, on charges of racketeering and other felony allegations, were being contacted by people in harassing and/or threatening manners. The doxing included home addresses of the grand jurors whose names were found on the doxing website… A website where both the Grand Jurors who returned the indictment against Donald J Trump and the Fulton County District Attorney is operated by a Russian company.”

Fed thinks economic growth could be as high as 5.6 percent in Q3

The Federal Reserve Bank may end up reporting GDP growth as high as 5.6 percent on annualized basis in the third quarter of 2023, doubling previous internal estimates, Bloomberg reports on something we’re not going to otherwise pretend to understand but it sounds pretty impressive.

“Any read on GDP growth above 3.2 percent would mark the strongest quarter since 2021, when the US was experiencing a rapid recovery from the initial shock of the pandemic. The acceleration is in stark contrast with the outlook for China, which has been downgraded in recent weeks amid a mounting property crisis,” Bloomberg writes in their report which sounds like good news.

Well unless you’re one of those people who don’t like good economic news when it means you have to stop repeating tired cliches like “Americans vote with their wallets!” because doing so consistently in such situations is effectively an acknowledgement that victory is less than assured for the candidates you prefer in the next election. Then it’s bad news and decidedly at cross purpose with whatever actual sincere desire one may have for economic growth and for middle class families to prosper and so on and so forth. Which was supposed to be the reason you were constantly complaining about the suffering caused by current economic policies in the first place rather than simply exploiting whatever electoral advantage that could be gained by said suffering.

And yeah we were talking about Republicans, who are going to be fucking PISSED if “Bidenomics” ends up getting validated by 5.6 percent gross domestic product growth in the third quarter.

Mexicans now have more rights than Floridians, Texans

In their version of Roe v. Wade, the Mexican Supreme Court decriminalized abortion across the nation, allowing patients seeking abortions in states like Texas, Alabama and Mississippi to get safe, legal medical care across the border, the Associated Press reports.

Various Mexican states had legalized abortions in some manner–in the same patchwork policy Republicans believe works on a national level in the US–but in an opinion issued Wednesday, the Supreme Court ordered the procedure decriminalized nationwide.  With Mexico’s federally-funded health system, the order also requires all hospitals to provide abortion on-demand to patients to seek one at a government-run facility.

Orange Warlord openly vows to establish fascist police state

Deposed authoritarian Donald Trump on Wednesday vowed to establish a fascist police state in which enemies of his regime will be subject to prosecution and imprisonment for attempting to hold him accountable through various legitimate congressional and criminal investigations over the years.

“They spied on my Campaign, Impeached me twice, had the Russia, Russia Hoax, the Fake Dossier Hoax, FISA Fraud, Election Fraud, the ‘No Collusion’ Mueller Hoax, and so much more. I was innocent on all counts. If I am elected, they will be brought to JUSTICE, something that Republicans have always been afraid to do,” Trump wrote on his lame, QAnon-infested Twitter clone, continuing in another post with “Right now Republicans in Congress and the Senate have to get tough, and put everything together in one big, neat package, because I will be President in one and a half years, and we will pick the strongest, toughest, and most respected Attorney General, and if guilty, we will put them all in jail where they belong, just as they are trying to do to me based on NOTHING.”

The posts came in between bitching about former Vice President Mike Pence and ghoulish, far right racist but still anti-Trump influencer Ann Coulter. Left unexplained was why Trump failed to fulfill similarly terroristic promises of retribution made toward Hillary Clinton during his 2016 campaign.
