Tucson Police Chief Chris Magnus, a 35-year veteran of law enforcement, heads the 1,070-person police department, which serves a city of approximately 550,000 residents. He has been in the position since 2016.
Numerous reports have come out of Portland about men in camouflage, with no agency or personal identification detaining people off the streets and driving them away in unmarked vans. Some of those detained have said they were taken to the federal courthouse, where they were kept for hours before being released with charges, a hearing or even an explanation about why they were detained.
Customs and Border Protection have admitted that its officers are taking part in these actions, which have been decried by local and state officials who have said they did not request federal assistance.
