“Three people were killed and five were shot during a graduation party in Kendall, Florida, early Sunday, according to the Miami-Dade Police Department,” reports NBC News. “A graduation party was wrapping up at a local strip mall when two vehicles, a dark colored Chevy Malibu and a white Toyota Camry, pulled into the parking lot and began firing on the crowd, said Miami-Dade Police Department Director Freddy Ramirez.”
“Three people were killed in the shooting, two in a vehicle that crashed into Miami-Dade County College Kendall Campus, and a woman, who was a Florida corrections officer, Ramirez said.”
“Five people who were shot are in stable condition, according to Ramirez. The victims were self-transported to local hospitals. The deceased and living victims were not immediately identified.”
The state of Florida has been plagued by high levels of gun violence for over a decade as Republican governors have sought to make it easier for Floridians to buy guns. Former NRA lobbyist Marion Hammer was said to be so influential in Florida politics that she had former governor Rick Scott’s office phone number on her cell phone, and when she delivered draft legislation from NRA headquarters, Republican lawmakers in the state were afraid to even suggest minor revisions.
