Random thoughts Friday, Volume XLIV

  • Britney is free and Bannon is indicted.  Happy Friday!
  • Can’t wait to see the photos of Mike Pence (and his brother, Republican Indiana Congressman Greg Pence) cowering on a loading dock at the Capitol on January 6th, hiding from the “peaceful” and “nonviolent” Trump insurrectionists.
  • The federal misdemeanor with which Steve Bannon has been charged has a mandatory minimum sentence of 30 days and a max sentence of 364 days.  He will be convicted because it’s a clear-cut case.  It will also send a chill to all the others who have ignored the House subpoenas.  It also means that if all Trump aides attempt to ignore the subpoenas, Trump’s entire 2024 “re-election’ circus staff could be in jail during the midterms.
  • Remember when Trump thought it was a smart move to put Bannon on the National Security Council?
  • A civilian carrying an assault rifle on the street–regardless of if the situation is peaceful or not–is an inherently provocative act.  People don’t carry them for self-protection; they carry them as an instrument of assumed power and an implied threat.  That alone is all the reason needed to revoke the right for someone who would do that to be able to do that.
  • It’s been a week, and passing the bipartisan infrastructure bill is still a big fucking deal.  Preach, Joe!
  • In 2017, when Congress passed the Trump tax cut that added trillions to the federal debt, there was bipartisan opposition to it; only Republicans voted to pass it in what was praised by conservatives as an effective use of power. Now, though, the bipartisan infrastructure bill supported by the Biden Administration got votes from both Parties in both chambers (with a few “hall pass” votes against it from Dems in the House).  But according to pundits, it shows how weak Biden is.  This is how the narrative differs in the media.
  • Another media construct:  Biden’s poll numbers.  During the Trump era, you rarely heard media discuss polls, which showed TFG under 44% approval his entire term.  Biden’s currently at a 43% job approval, just below Trump’s highest rating.
  • Based on the amount of advertising on the network, Fox News viewers really believe the so-called scientific evidence actual (unnamed) medical doctors used to develop miracle drugs like ReliefFactor, Blue Emu and FocusFactor.  But strangely, they don’t believe the doctors at the FDA and NIH who want you to get vaccinated but don’t support any health claims made by those products.
  • I remember a time when Republicans wanted to impeach Al Gore for talking to campaign donors in phone calls from his Vice Presidential office in the White House–a violation of the Hatch Act, they claimed.  (Vice Presidents are exempt from many aspects of the Hatch Act.)  Now, the GOP has no problem with such violations… when it was done by minions in the Trump administration.
  • On Twitter, a random anti-vaxxer said he trusts Joe Rogan because Rogan talks about information from various sources that aren’t covered by the media, and we should not trust what the media reports.  I reminded him that Joe Rogan, a podcaster, is part of the media, and by his own statement, Rogan should not be trusted.  Since then, silence.
  • We sports fans have special rituals/superstitions we follow when our team plays.  Alright, I didn’t have my breakfast bagel with cream cheese and jelly, but I did wear the lucky boxers and had the pepperoni pizza for dinner.  I just can’t explain the poor performance of the Ravens last night.
  • I’m learning how different salts impact the final taste of a dish.  I made a loaf of bread with sea salt instead of table salt and the loaf came out nicely subtly salty.  Recently made a fish dish using kosher salt and couldn’t taste it at all.  I must experiment more.
  • Chillier weather means I start digging into the spices and herbs.  To me, warmer weather translates to lightly seasoned dishes, but cool means bold flavors.  Garlic is king in our house.  My other favorites:  Rosemary, ginger, oregano and nutmeg.  Fresh is better than jarred, and from the garden is better than from the store.  There are no bad spices, just bad cooks.
  • A storm came through last night and blew all the leaves off the trees.  It went from colorful autumn to bare winter overnight.
