Canadian government officials of all political persuasions are calling for American Republicans to stop encouraging and funding a group of rogue truckers who are blockading streets in the capital city of Ottawa, the Associated Press reports. One Cabinet official referred to GOP efforts as “political interference” from a foreign government.
Republican US governors including Florida’s Ron DeSantis and Texas’s Greg Abbott; Senators Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley; and titular head of the Republican Party Donald Trump have all urged Americans to donate to a fund supporting the truckers.
In response to a tweet by Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, Canada’s Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino replied, “It is certainly not the concern of the Texas attorney general as to how we in Canada go about our daily lives in accordance with the rule of law. … We need to be vigilant about potential foreign interference … Whatever statements may have been made by some foreign official are neither here nor there. We’re Canadian. We have our own set of laws. We will follow them.”
