First Lady Dr. Jill Biden met with her Ukrainian counterpart during a previously-unannounced trip to the war-torn nation as Dr. Biden completed a four-day swing through Eastern Europe, the Associated Press reports.
Biden met with Olena Zelenska, the wife of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during a two-hour trip in Uzhhorod, Ukraine, a ten minute drive from the Slovakian border. “I wanted to come on Mother’s Day,” Biden told Zelenska. “I thought it was important to show the Ukrainian people that this war has to stop and this war has been brutal and that the people of the United States stand with the people of Ukraine.”
Dr. Biden traveled to Romania and Slovakia to meet with refugees, US military personnel, embassy staff and aid workers over the last four days.
