The McKinney wildfire in California has grown to an astounding 51,000 acres, nearly 50% larger than the entire District of Columbia, making it the largest wildfire this year and it is still 0% contained, meaning that it’s essentially growing uncontrolled, CBS News reports.
Meanwhile, in Kentucky, the official death toll from the heavy rains and flooding that hit the area last week has risen to 28, Democratic Governor Andy Beshear announced, with the area bracing for another round of heavy storms forecast to hit the area this week. Another 37 people remain missing, and more than 350 have been housed in shelters because they homes were damaged or destroyed, or access to their homes has been blocked.
“We still can’t get into some areas to check on people,” Beshear said. “We’re doubling our National Guard. We’re going to work to go door to door, work to find, again, as many people as we can. We’re even going to work through the rain. But the weather is complicating it.”
