Random thoughts Friday, Volume CXXVI

  • Who had Russian Revolution on their Friday bingo card?  Oh, everyone?
  • Hunter Biden pleaded guilty, and no one took to the streets claiming a Deep State conspiracy.  He fucked up; he copped a plea; he’s taking responsibility.  That’s how adults handle things, not whining about being persecuted.
  • Yes, the loss of the Titan sub is tragic, but (a) FAFO and (b) deep sea diving, just like deep space flight, is a dangerous endeavor on the cutting edge of technology and science.  That said, it sounds as though the operator cut safety checks for the sake of getting the vehicle into the water, which made failure an eventual certainty.  
  • No one’s taking seriously an ethics censure from a caucus that includes George Santos.
  • You know who’s having a tough night?  Yeah, of course, Putin.  But also Tucker Carlson. He’s got no platform to tell Americans how great this revolt makes Putin look, and how those wimpy Wagner fighters don’t know how good they have it, dying for Vlad.
  • Jim Jordan’s right:  we have a two-tiered justice system.  The Hunter Biden case proves it, but Jordan’s followers won’t like the issue:  we need to arrest all the people who falsely filled out a handgun purchase background form and lied about their use of drugs or alcohol.  That’ll get a lot of guns out of the hands of people who would do the most harm.  Every single person arrested for drunk driving on a suburban Missouri street needs to turn in their guns.  As Jim says, enforce the law equally.
  • The GOP’s current policy priorities are to expunge Trump’s impeachment (though there’s no way to do that constitutionally) while promoting Biden’s impeachment.  They utilize their power to limit women’s rights and target LGBTQ people.  They’re full of stunts and PR events, but that won’t be enough to win elections in the post-Trump era.
  • Can someone update me on how many acres of forest were raked for the Trump Administration’s wildfire-fighting initiative?  
  • The Durham performance and the Trump-appointed Delaware US Attorney investigation into Hunter Biden each lasted more than four years.  They resulted in one felony conviction, no prison time, and a fissure in the House GOP that’s hilarious to watch open.
  • Proposed legislation:  no federal disaster aid for any state that discriminates against parts of its population based on their status as a protected class.  So Florida, no hurricane relief.  DeSantis can use the state budget surplus he brags about instead of getting federal taxpayer money.
  • It occurs to me that Boebert is likely the first member of Congress from the Reality TV generation, and she acts like it.  It’s like she thinks Fear Factor is real life.
  • You don’t see Jesus’s feet in DaVinci’s The Last Supper because a 17th Century renovation of the church required a door in the wall and well, Christ’s feet had to go.
  • Boebert confirmed Friday she is a grandmother by her 17-year-old son impregnating his then-15-year-old girlfriend.  If her line continues to breed on the same timeframe as the Pharoh cicada, she’ll be a great-great-grandmother about the time she’ll be eligible for full Social Security benefits.
  • Earl Grey’s a damn fine black tea.  (Not Mrs. Jack’s, though.  She’s an English Breakfast Tea girl.)  Earl Grey was the first tea I remember having after being weened on Lipton’s Orange Pekoe-esque blend, and it introduced me at the concept of the subtle flavors of food.  Nothing against other black teas–except maybe Darjeeling–but the Earl’s my fav for an afternoon lift.
  • Not a fan of the summer solstice, to be honest.  The fact that daylight is now getting shorter lingers over me for months.  It’s like I’m watching a slowly closing door.
  • It seems cheap to focus on the Boebert-Taylor Greene feud on the floor of the House, but it’s news because usually, HR would step in to ease a rivalry between two attention-seeking divorcees at work.
  • I still don’t get it:  we have an email, released by the candidate’s son, outlining said son’s desire to set up a time for him, his brother-in-law and the campaign’s chair to meet with representatives of the Kremlin to help the candidate’s campaign with dirt on his opponent, a fact Trumpettes ignore when claiming there was no “Russian collusion” nor Russian help to the Trump campaign in the election, but Adam Schiff is censured for telling people he had proof of Russian tampering in the 2016 election to benefit the Trump campaign when, I mean, Junior put the email on TwitterThey fucking admitted it.
