Two officers of the Bristol, Connecticut police department were killed and a third critically wounded Wednesday night in what investigators are calling an ambush by at least one man armed with an AR-15 assault rifle, the Hartford Courant reports.
Police received a 9-1-1 call that two siblings were fighting at a specific address. When the officers arrived, 35-year-old Nicholas Brutcher opened fire on them from a position outside the house. His shots immediately killed Officer Alex Hamzy, 34, and wounded 35-year-old Sgt. Dustin DeMonte and 26-year-old Alec Iurato. DeMonte died later at a local hospital; Iurato was rushed into surgery with several gunshot wounds.
Nicholas Brutcher was killed at the scene by officers returning fire. His 32-year-old brother, Nathan, was wounded in the incident and is expected to survive his wounds. It’s unclear what role, if any, Nathan had in the attack.
