More than one million households in the United States are headed by same-sex couples, a first in American history, with reported open same-sex households increasing by 120% since 2008, Census Bureau data shows, NBC News reports.
Census data show more than 1.2 million self-declared LGBTQ-led households in 2021, up from 540,000 during the last data sweep in 2008 American Community Survey. About 60% of these households are led by married couples.
One aspect that likely drove the number of LGBTQ couples openly declaring their status is the 2015 Obergefell decision that legalized same-sex marriage across the United States. Corrupt Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas stated in his concurring opinion to the Dobbs case overturning Roe that he wanted to review Obergefell and other cases that recognized the privacy rights of individuals including Griswold which legalized birth control and Lawrence, which legalized non-procreational sex.
