Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Attorney General Dana Nessel announced that the state will file a lawsuit against Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and the Department of Education over federal funding for coronavirus relief, according to mlive.com.
At issue is more than $13 billion in funds for schools, some of which Michigan officials contend are illegally allocated for private schools according to DofEd guidelines. Those guidelines run contrary to Michigan law, according to the suit.
The funds, distributed under the CARES Act, are supposed to pay for the disinfecting schools, purchasing equipment and training teachers.
“Unfortunately, this most recent action by Secretary DeVos is really just another example in a long history of an administration that uses any and every opportunity available to tip the scales in favor of private schools at the great expense of our public schools,” said Attorney General Nessel.
