Too many of us in Blue America fell for the hype that the Trump Administration would end in self-destruction early and Mike Pence would end up being sworn in as the 46th president at some point or another before probably at some point in 2019 it became clear we were stuck with the fat fuck until 2021 at the earliest. It’s easy to blame the media for this in hindsight, but they don’t make a product when there’s no market for it. Every minute development in the Russia investigation brought such joy to the libs who so craved and hoped for justice to be delivered to a degenerate madman who had no business in the most powerful job on Earth even if he had been elected legitimately.
And some of those “It’s Mueller Time!” memes were so fucking cringe too. Seriously, even at the time that stuff was embarrassing. Whoever came up with that “Mueller Ain’t Going Away” should be forced to drink a gallon of 1 percent lowfat milk in under an hour as penance for that bullshit.
That being said, nobody should think it was a waste of time and energy to follow the Russia scandal and the Mueller investigation. Sure, liberal brains got filled with names of obscure figures like Amin Agalarov and Carter Page (remember them?) and it was ultimately a dead end in and of itself and the fanboys got their “No collusion! No obstruction!” memes to own the libs with.
But damned if the allegations weren’t ultimately borne out one way or another. Does Trump welcome foreign interference in American elections? Yes, he got impeached for it. Is Trump a shitty businessman whose real estate empire is built on a corrupt house of cards? Fuck yes. Was he far more guilty of basically every sin he ever accused Hillary Clinton of during the 2016 campaign, especially a cavalier attitude toward handling classified materials? Double fuck yes.
Best of all, you can actually draw a straight line from the Mueller Investigation to the crimes Trump was arraigned on this week. It’s not clear whom the Wall Street Journal sourced from when they originally broke the story about the 2016 hush money payoff to Stormy Daniels on January 12, 2018. It might’ve been from Mueller’s team, it might not have been. They were looking into Michael Cohen over his connections to Russian collusion in 2016, particularly the Trump Tower Moscow that never happened and may have stumbled upon it. What isn’t in question is that Mueller made the referral which led to the FBI raid on Cohen’s office (five years ago tomorrow). Cohen then pleaded guilty and cooperated with the federal investigation, which became the Manhattan District Attorney’s investigation, which became Trump getting arrested and arraigned on Tuesday.
Will he be convicted? Who knows. Lawfare editor and smart lady Quinta Jurecic writes “Without getting too into the weeds of the current debate on legal twitter over the Trump indictment, there seems to be a split between folks who have practiced NY [criminal] law (who generally think the indictment is stronger) and former fed prosecutors/law profs (who think it is weaker).”
Either way, remember we’re actually talking about a Trump indictment here. Not a grand jury investigation, a criminal indictment which could put him in prison if he’s convicted. The Orange God Emperor facing justice is far less of an abstraction than it was five years ago or even ten days ago.
Maybe some of these Hill Disqus accounts are still active. Maybe the users aren’t in prison themselves for storming the Capitol on January 6th. Maybe they’re still alive after ending up on a ventilator from the Delta or Omicron variants of COVID that they caught months after the vaccine became available for free at every single CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, etc in the United States.
Maybe they’ll answer if you ask them what happened to this uranium story. Seeing your reply in their notifications queue might be the first reminder they’ve had in years that THIS was the thing that was going to bring Hillary Clinton down a year after she lost, and just over two months before the Wall Street Journal broke the story about the Stormy Daniels payoff. Why not make up some Aesopian parable about two trees growing next to each other, with one now blooming from being fed truth and the other dead of neglect and lies or something. You guys are smart like that.
