Random thoughts Friday, Volume CXIX

  • Tucker Carlson: ex-Fox, ex-CNN, ex-MSNBC, ex-PBS.  Carlson isn’t some great television personality that make these networks clamor to him.  He’s simply an anti-intellectual provocateur, trading in fear, frustration and bigotry to line his pockets.  While he’s likely to never see a network camera again, another like him will rise from the heap to fill the timeslot.  Fox will never learn.
  • Damn right Joe Biden is running again.  He’s got the record to win.  How do we know?  Republicans are focusing on culture war issues, not policy, and the one thing they’re railing on is the exit from Afghanistan–initiated by Donald Trump, who did nothing to facilitate it–from two years ago. Nothing the GOP is concentrating on happened since then.  Not a damn thing.
  • Ron DeSantis heads the most corrupt state government in the US. Republicans in the legislature are ignoring or changing laws to accommodate his shadow presidential run. His minions are enforcing his draconian culture war rules.  And his Surgeon General jeopardized people’s lives by altering Covid case data.
  • Fox executives reportedly kept a “dossier” on Carlson containing complaints and incidents of racism, sexism and harassment in case they needed to fire him so they could blackmail him to keep quiet.  My question:  Why wasn’t he fired after the first item was considered for the dossier?
  • In her continuing assault on reality, Marge stated this week that adoptive parents aren’t “real” parents, the latest item in a long list of disgusting things she did that Republicans will just brush off because she brings in money.
  • Harry Belafonte personified what scares Republicans about celebrities, who tend to favor liberal policies.  Belafonte used his fame to promote his political causes very effectively.  He “normalized” the Civil Rights movement to a lot of white middle-class families.  (And he’s widely considered the unofficial godfather of Cuban rap.)
  • John Roberts wants to assert the Supreme Court’s power while abdicating its accountability as all Republicans do.
  • Favorite MAGAt Twitter interchange this week, telling me that the coronavirus was an engineered virus China designed to attack the United States, huh?  I responded:  If that’s true, you’re willing to admit Donald Trump did nothing to defend the United States and its citizens, right? … ‘cause China deployed the weapon when he was in charge, not Joe, not Obama.
  • How fucked up is an employer who keeps a running tally of an employee’s disgusting acts and does nothing to stop it but keeps the dossier to blackmail the employee?
  • Why don’t we have one set of ethics disclosures for anyone who was elected or appointed to a federal office?  Include all spousal income, potential conflicts of interest, financial entanglements, etc.  It’ll cover everyone in Congress, the Executive Branch, and all the judges from SCOTUS on down.  They’re all public servants; we, the public, have the right to see any potential issue.
  • I’m an admitted sports fan, but I do not understand the appeal of traveling to a city for a league’s draft.  “Why are you in Kansas City?”  “To see someone read a name.”
  • You had Madison Cawthorn.  We have Maxwell Frost.  We win.
  • The same people who mock those who got Covid vaccine saying they’re paranoid fools who don’t know science are the same ones who declare open carry laws needed because you never know when you’re going to find yourself in a situation where you need to defend yourself.
  • For decades, a portion of our property flooded every time it rained.  It would be a boggy mess for days after even a light shower.  We removed two large bushes earlier this spring from a fenceline near the ponding and viola! no more standing water. The bushes’ roots had formed an underground dam in the water’s natural path; removing them let the water flow freely away.  What I thought would be a $10,000 landscaping project was solved by our landscaper for just $150, which just goes to show you should always try the simplest solutions first. Small victories.
  • O’Reilly Auto Parts has everything you require for your vehicular needs, including your time travel accessories. Well, at least one item.
  • Brown is an underappreciated color.  It’s all around us:  trees, dirt, wood flooring in your home, chocolate, animal fur.  Base colors in fashion like tan and beige are in the brown family.  Yet no one ever lists brown as their favorite color. That’s kinda shitty.
  • Simple sauces can enhance an entree.  Sour cream, lemon juice and dill–add in cumin and/or garlic if you like–is a really easy way to step up a bland fish dinner.  People will think you’re a genius for a three-minute sauce you mix in a Tupperware cup.
  • I really enjoy writing with fountain pens… or at least, I did until my recent hand injury.  Now, because of the way my hand’s contorted, I smear ink over the page the way a left-hander used to do in grade school.  It gives me renewed respect for people with good penmanship as they age, not that you see it in the age of keyboards.
  • Chaperoning prom this week.  I won’t say we didn’t do things the students today do–we probably did things comparatively far worse–but I’m sure I’ll have a look on my face similar to those of the old fogey chaperones from my prom during the Eisenhower era.
