Random thoughts Friday, Volume CXLVI

  • My favorite part of Tuesday’s election outcome was the reckoning Fox hosts and pundits had as the results came in, right before they started to ignore it.
  • Vivek Ramaswamy is the Herman Cain of Marianne Williamsons.
  • Republicans have won the popular vote in the presidential race just once in the last three decades and it took post 9/11 war-fueled nationalism to do that.  Since Trump left office, Americans have voted like 1/6 was another attack on our democracy… because it was.
  • The new Google phone feature that lets you trade out faces from other pics so you create the “perfect” image, without people blinking or looking away from the camera, creepily fabricates memories of things that never happened.
  • In the relatively early days of The Internet As We Know It (like, 2002-ish), I made a comment on a message board for a sports team that an editor at USA Today found so witty he wanted to feature it in the newspaper’s sports weekly.  I say that not to brag, but in amazement that I had to go through three steps to verify my identity and confirm that I made the comment on the board, and then actually verbally say the quote to the reporter so they would use the quote in print but now, Fox shows feature posts from random social media accounts from users with names like @TrumpLegHumper502 as if it’s sworn testimony.  You need more ID to view a porn site in Utah than to get a quote on Fox.
  • We told you about the 2025 Project and Trump’s desire for revenge in 2015, although we didn’t actually believe they would publish it.
  • Remember when Republicans impeached a President for lying about an extramarital affair?  And shockingly, the exact moral straw that broke that camel’s back is gone no longer even a consideration in today’s GOP.  In fact, sex scandals are a quaint part of today’s Republican resume.
  • I’m not exaggerating when I say I fear that the Boebert-Sporkfoot feud makes the likelihood of a firearms incident on the floor of the House greater.  If one of them doesn’t bring a gun onto the floor, someone else will for fear of their irrationality.
  • It must be heart-crushing, hearing the woman you’ve longed for her entire life giving testimony from the stand that could cost you hundreds of millions of dollars.
  • Serious sigh of relief when I read Moms for Liberty candidates largely failed in local elections outside pre-existing Red State bubbles.  My fear, though, lies in the stealth ones who didn’t explode in the campaign, but wait for the first board meeting, but local voters seem to be staying vigilant.
  • Trump appointed Bannon to the National Security Council after the 2016 election.  And then he was arrested on the yacht of a dissident Chinese billionaire.  He was convicted of fraud, but pardoned.  And then he was later subpoenaed in a Congressional investigation into Trump’s attempt to undermine the Constitution that Bannon promoted on his media outlet, and is being held in contempt for ignoring the subpoena.  When he talks–and he will–he will be the lynchpin to so, so many things.
  • There was a time when every voiceover artist tried to sound like James Earl Jones.  Then it was Sam Elliott, and then Morgan Freeman.  Now, it seems to be Jesse Eisenberg.
  • Non-zero chance that Alvin Bragg “indefinitely postpones” Trump’s Manhattan prosecution if the defendant gets convicted in the DC federal case first.  Also zero chance that Willis forgoes the Fulton County RICO prosecution under any circumstance.
  • The difference between abortion and guns as political issues:  Put a pro-choice question on the ballot in every state, and 47 of them would enshrine rights, which is why its advocates have no issue with putting the issue out for a referendum.  Gun advocates know if they attempted to clarify gun rights in state-wide votes, it would result in a vote overwhelmingly against them.
  • I grew up in a two-century-old farmhouse with a huge walk-in brick fireplace in a room known as the “summer kitchen” at the back of the house.  As I started a fire in my puny modern fireplace on a chilly night, I flashed back to my father trying, unsuccessfully, to clear the room of smoke when he tried to set a fire in the hearth but failed to successfully prime the flue.  Lesson learned young.
  • Plenty of holidays have good food associated with them, but few have good leftovers the way Thanksgiving does.  The Easter or Christmas ham is good days later, but food from “picnic” holidays like Independence Day and Labor Day don’t last.  But think about it:  the second-best holiday for leftovers is, hands down, Halloween.
  • Two-thirds of American have a favorable view of labor unions, particularly after the union victories after actions in the auto and entertainment industries.  Unions secure America’s middle class.  The Biden era is turning into the most labor-friendly administration in more than a generation.
