Random thoughts Friday, Volume CXLVIII

  • This Friday of all Fridays doesn’t feel like a Friday.
  • There is one reason and one reason alone Donald Trump isn’t pushing for a settlement in New York’s civil case like he did with every other such case he’s been involved within the last 50 years:  he cannot afford to pay the expected fines, so he’s dragging it out.  He does not want it understood that he has no cash.
  • If you went to a Trump rally and asked people if killing turkeys causes winter, I’d put the over/under at 42% who would agree.
  • The $90 turkey thing was stupid, but then Fox scurrying around to two different organic grocery stores–in exceptionally wealthy neighborhoods outside New York and Los Angeles–to find 28-pound free-range, non-GMO turkeys with gold beaks and white-meat legs just to find birds for sale over $80 was simply insulting.
  • The man’s in the midst of a civil trial for lying about his finances, he’s got a Manhattan criminal suit pending about lying on financial documents, and he’s facing federal criminal charges for lying.  But yeah, he should sue twenty media outlets for (what he claims) are incorrect reports about the losses his failing social media company incurred.  Trump knows damn right well that discovery in the case will require him to release Truth Social’s *actual* financials, which is why he’ll drop it in months.
  • Thanksgiving is the favorite meal of the year.  The second favorite:  the mash-up of sides covered in gravy you put into a plowl–that bowl/plate thing you use for pasta–and throw into the microwave the next afternoon because you’re too lazy to cut anything up.
  • I’ve roasted, grilled, slow-roasted, and convection-baked a turkey.  I’ve even smoked a turkey.  (It was a bitch to roll, let me tell ya.)  But deep frying is by far my favorite, both as the cook and as the diner:  tasty, moist and quick.
  • Nope, not gonna do any Black Friday sales.  There’s no $20 discount that could make me fight through crowds.  And I’m more about the sentimentality than the cost or commercialism.
  • This week, I made the mistake of taking Trump’s motions to dismiss seriously.  I read every page looking for a cogent legal argument that I, a non-lawyer, couldn’t drive a truck through.  I gave them every benefit of the doubt, handed them a “win” in everything but the most ridiculous arguments.  I even tried to consider his “double jeopardy” argument as a serious legal challenge.  Those are 90 minutes of my life that I will never get back and I will lie on my deathbed wondering why I wasted my time on that.  This post is my justification for that time.
  • Credit Mrs. Jack for using muffin tins and pastry dough to make single-serve pumpkin pie tartlets, not one pie.  She could, of course, use a traditional pie tin, but both would still be a single serving size in this house.
  • The Musk defamation lawsuit against Media Matters in three imagined lines:
Media Matters attorney: ‘Mr. Musk, did you take any safeguards to stop advertisers’ material from appearing next to posts from racist, neo-Nazi, and/or white nationalists that supported bigotry, hatred, and/or violence?”
    Musk: “No.”
    Judge: “Case dismissed.”
  • I grew up in a region of Pennsylvania where the Monday after Thanksgiving was a holiday all its own meriting school closing:  the first day of deer season.  I think they’ve moved the opening to the season to the preceding Saturday in the intervening years, but the schools have kept the Monday vacation day as a tradition.
  • Speaking of failing social media companies, whatever happened to Mike Lindell’s Frank Speech?  Did someone turn the lights out?
  • During the college football season, NFL games should be limited to Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays.  Give college the rest of the time, even Thanksgiving weekend.  We don’t need (or want) NFL football on Black Friday.
  • This will likely be my first winter as an anatomical weather station:  “My hands think it’s gonna rain soon, but my knee says it won’t last long.”
  • Our dog’s younger, more energetic friends come over for Yappy Hour in our fenced yard and when he’s done wrestling, running and playing with them, he’ll literally go to the gate and bark until they exit (but he’ll watch protectively until they’re safely in their fenced yard next door).  “I’m tired. Get out of my yard.  Go home.  I need a nap.” That’s the emotional honesty and self-awareness of a mature dog I can respect.
  • Check out one of nature’s great wonders tonight: a close fly-by of Jupiter and the near-full Moon in tonight’s sky.  The distance is incomprehensible, but it is a true sublime bit of celestial wonder.
