NRCC Chair Richard Hudson tells Punchbowl his most vulnerable incumbents are pretty much on their own when it comes to abortion messaging, saying swing district guys such as Mike Lawler and Marc Molinaro “need to articulate their position to the voters, because the voters think the Republican position is like, ‘We’ll throw you in jail if you get an abortion,'” even though that more or less came pretty close to happening to an Ohio woman this week. Actually she had a miscarriage.
Anyway Hudson then got maybe a little more upset over the situation, admitting Republicans “could have done a better job handling [abortion] last cycle, where the Democrats spent hundreds of millions of dollars on that topic and we pretty much just treated it like a hot stove and didn’t touch it.”
Finally Hudson gave into the dark side. “Republicans don’t have a policy problem. We have a branding problem. We need to point out that the Democrat position is abortion for any reason, up until the moment of birth, paid for by taxpayers. That’s extreme,” Hudson said, letting his fear lead to anger, his anger lead to hate, his hate lead to suffering. “If you’re losing on every issue that the voters care about, and you have no ideas on how to fix it, I would also want to change the subject to something else,” Hudson said, evidently quivering with rage that exaggerating issues with crime, the economy, and the border song isn’t quite doing it for them when women voters are still pissed.
