A recording obtained by the Daily Mail appears to document an attempt to bribe Arizona Republican (no office to list) Kari Lake to stay out of the race for the state’s Senate seat by state Party chair Jeff DeWit. Recorded last March, DeWit told Lake he was getting pressure from “back East” because Trump was going to lose and it was time to make way for other people.
“So the ask I got today from back East was: ‘Is there any companies out there or something that could just put her on the payroll to keep her out?’” DeWit asked Lake, who replied, “This is about defeating Trump and I think that’s a bad, bad thing for our country.”
DeWit went on to inquire if “there was a number–” he says before Lake cuts him off, saying “I can be bought? …This is not about money. It’s about our country.” The Daily Mail does not say what steps it took to authenticate the recording other than having two people identify DeWit’s voice from the recording.
