Slovakia’s new right wing populist government is making some changes in the way your average Slovak gets his or her news and entertainment, starting with trashing public broadcaster Radio and Television of Slovakia (RTVS) with Slovak Television and Radio (STVR), the BBC reports.
“We’re returning the adjective ‘Slovak’ to the name, which is a declaration of the unequivocal national and state-forming nature of our public broadcaster,” said ultra-nationalist Slovak National Party Culture Minister Martina Simkovicova in announcing the change. Simkovicova, a former journalist who looks kind of like Kayleigh McEnany, said there was too much “political activism” in RTVS’s coverage and that reporters weren’t objective enough. Also – shocker – her most recent gig was on a streaming channel known for pro-Russian narratives and disinfo about the COVID-19 vax.
