Hundreds of golf carts wound through the paths of The Villages, a large planned community in Sumter County, Florida of 50,000 people popular with retirees, all with one theme: cheering on Joe Biden’s presidential campaign.
As reported by the Associated Press, Trump faces an uncharacteristic uphill battle with seniors in this key swing state. He took Sumter County with 69% of the vote in 2016, but his support has been waning in Sumter Country and throughout Florida, with most polls showing the state leaning toward Biden this year.
Trump won the senior vote in Florida by double digits in 2016, but recent polling in the state show that Biden has slashed into Trump’s lead in that demographic. A recent poll by University of North Florida Public Opinion Research Lab found just 50% of Florida seniors voting for Trump and 47% for Biden.
Some polls show Biden with a significant lead in the polls, like a recent Quinnipiac poll showing Biden with a 55-40 lead over Trump.
Florida is one state that could be called on Election Day, given that mail-in ballots can be counted prior to Election Day. If Trump loses the state, Trump’s pathways to victory are extremely limited.
