More than 24 hours after the polls closed for Virginia’s Congressional primaries and the most high-profile race is still undecided, illustrating the growing rift in the Republican Party’s extreme wing. As the Washington Post reports, Virginia’s GOP primary for the 5th Congressional District seat is a dogfight between incumbent Freedom Caucus leader Bob Good and Trump-endorsed über-MAGA John J. McGuire III. With 97.8% of the votes counted, McGuire leads Good by 321 votes out of more than 62,000 cast.
The thing is, McGuire isn’t really any more MAGA than any other member of the cult, and he’s certain not more conservative than Bob Good, who not only was Trump’s endorsee in previous election, he voted to oust Kevin McCarthy from the Speakership. McGuire got Trump’s endorsement because he’s not Bob Good, who committed the venal sin of endorsing Trump opponent Ron DeSantis in the GOP presidential primary. There can be no dissent.
