Possibly figuring the office is kind of redunant since he’s already the supreme leader of the country anyway, Myanmar junta leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing went ahead and declared himself president on Monday, his first act of office renewing the state of emergency in place since Hlang and his crew ousted elected Premier Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021, the AP reports.
The previous president, Myint Swe, also appointed by the junta, is suffering from neurological disorders and is currently on temporary medical leave, per state media. It’s not clear if he’ll return or if the leave will become permanent after Swe suffers from cranial bullet-hole-itis.
