Random thoughts Friday, Volume CLXXXVI

  • Two billionaires laugh about firing workers, and then one of them descends the stairs from his clubhouse apartment at one of his private country clubs which new members pay seven figures to join so he can complain about the price of a box of Cheerios.  The disconnect from the lives of working Americans and their attempt to be the Everyman is absurd.
  • Those Presidential Medals of Freedom Trump says are just as respected as a Congressional Medal of Honor?  Well, Trump awarded 24 of them, more than half (13) went to professional athletes, coaches or sports franchise owners.  Golfers (4), including two non-Americans, got more than any other sport, more than doubling the number of golfers who had ever received the award since its inception in 1963. Y’know, those people who sacrificed for this nation on the sands of Pebble Beach, just like the sacrifice made by Audie Murphy or Travis Atkins.
  • I know the couch stories aren’t true, but I honestly thought Senator Guyliner would be more of a La-Z-Boy Republican.
  • Three US Presidents (Biden, Obama, and Clinton) will address the DNC in support of Kamala Harris, as well as the grandson of another (Carter).  So will two First Ladies (including one who was a former nominee/Senator/Sec’y of State) and the first Second Gentleman.  The Republican convention had… Trump.  That’s it.  There is no Republican legacy anymore; there is only Trump.
  • A lot happened quickly to subvert Trump’s campaign–Biden announcing his retirement, Harris’s ascension, JD Vance’s appointment, the outrage at Project 2025 brewing–but nothing has done more damage than Trump himself through his own words.  So please, Lewandowski, let Trump be Trump some more.
  • Conservatives loved Wikileaks eight years ago when it posted Hillary Clinton’s emails.  I wonder why they’re objecting to releasing stolen proprietary information from Trump’s campaign this time around if they were all about transparency in 2016.  It’s like they have two sets of rules: one for him and one for everyone else. Just like the media.
  • We finally learned the Trump Doctrine for foreign policy:  “Way/No Way.”
  • Produced correctly, the Democratic convention can not only entertain people, but it can educate and energize the electorate to exercise their power.  Think Schoolhouse Rock on Red Bull mixed with Bill Pullman speech from Independence Day.
  • Two weeks after conservatives panicked when the Dow dropped 3% and declared the US economy was crashing, the markets have recovered their losses.  Jobless claims are down.  Consumer confidence is rising.  Republicans are Chicken Little with microphones who for some reason Americans trust with the economy.
  • Modern politics has literally become a figurative wrestling match between Jesse Ventura and Hulk Hogan.
  • There’s another chocolate company in Pennsylvania:  the little-known but much-beloved Wilbur Chocolate Co. in Lititz.  It was a family favorite growing up because my father would bring a five-pound box of Wilbur Buds home when he visited clients in the area, a tradition I continued.  When I saw a YouTube video called “Irish People Try Wilbur’s Chocolate,” I expected the European taste to lambast American chocolate, but proudly, Wilbur did my home state proud.
  • Trump told Musk climate change would result in more beachfront property.  He neglects to account for the loss of all the current beachfront property that would turn into underwater property in the meantime.
  • Tim Walz makes me miss Chris Farley and wonder what could’ve been.
  • Trump saying he would flee to Venezuela if he loses the election should be enough to revoke his bail and seize his passport.  At least, it would be for a regular defendant who doesn’t enjoy a second tier of justice.
  • Lost in the fucked-up Twitter interview where two billionaires joked about firing workers is the fact that outside of his scripted reality-esque show, Trump never fired anyone to their face when he was in the White House. He was always too chicken.  He would tweet it or demand someone else do it.  Everything about that guy is fake, even his catchphrase.
  • You had a good run, Hairbo, but Albanese is the superior gummy bear.
  • The round of applause for Joe Biden at the DNC on Monday will rightfully be thunderous.  He personifies the patriotism that puts the country and the Constitution over self.
