The weather forecasting team at KRQE in Albuquerque, New Mexico report that the wind conditions for Sunday’s Mass Ascension at Balloon Fiesta, meaning the risk of death from wind-driven collisions with high voltage power transmission lines, guy wires supporting radio towers, other balloons, and rocky cliffs is not especially high. Or not high enough to stay in your motel during the fiesta.
Of course that could change and winds could dramatically shift in direction and intensity just seconds after you launch, dragging your balloon right toward the airport and directly into the path of an approaching Airbus A380 with its wheels down and ready to land. Or into a heavily forested mountainside filled with hungry wolves, bears, and cougars. Or even into Mexico.
