Less than a week after the Supreme Court ordered President Trump to turn his tax returns and financial records over to the Manhattan District Attorney, lawyers for Trump will argue to the judge overseeing the case that the subpoena demanding the taxes is too broad and politically motivated, The New York Times reports.
In a 7-2 judgement issued last Thursday, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance in his investigation of Trump’s finances as part of a hush-money and money laundering scheme to pay an adult film actress with whom Trump had an affair.
Trump’s lawyers said they will argue to block the subpoena when the lower court judge, Victor Marrero, asked if any further actions were planned by either side in the case after the SCOTUS decision. Marrero will take up the matter in a hearing on Thursday.
Last year, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office began investigating the hush money payments, which resulted in Trump lawyer Michael Cohen pleading guilty in federal court to federal charges brought by the US Attorney’s office in the Southern District of New York.
During his admission of guilt and subsequent plea before the court, Cohen noted that “individual 1” directed payment of funds to pornstar Stormy Daniels through a shell company, and that Cohen was reimbursed by companies owned by “individual 1.”
It was later revealed by Cohen in Congressional testimony that “individual 1” was, in fact, Donald J. Trump.
