Missouri Republican Senator Josh Hawley lives in a $1.3 million mansion in a Virginia suburb of Washington, DC. His children go to school in local schools. He pays income and property taxes in Virginia.
Yet, according to the Kansas City Star, Hawley registered to vote using his sister home address in Christian County, Missouri, on his voter registration. His sister, Lesley Hawley, pays the property taxes for the home at that address.
On television and in emails to his constituents in Missouri, Hawley has frequently ranted against the “coastal elites” who, he claims, run Washington and who think Missouri is flyover country, yet Hawley doesn’t live there and hasn’t since he was elected. Incidentally, Hawley went to college at Stanford, which is in California, and law school at Yale, which is in Connecticut; his alma maters are on two separate coasts.
In 2019, Hawley’s parents added him to a deed for undeveloped property they own in Christian County ten months after he took office in Washington, DC. Hawley points to a home under construction, allegedly on that land, as his legal residence, but the house isn’t even framed out. And then there’s the pesky fact that he and his family live in a $1.3 million house in Virginia.
Prior to his election, Hawley reported his address in Columbia, Missouri, while he taught at the University of Missouri law school and then served as the state’s Attorney General, but he sold that house in March 2019. Mysteriously, he listed the mortgage for that house as a financial liability on his Senate financial disclosure forms.
That same month, Hawley and his wife were listed as co-owners of his parents home in Springfield, Missouri, but his parents sold that home three months later to a different party. So at this point, he doesn’t own a residence in Missouri, a situation that may break state law and make him ineligible for office.
Hawley, however, attacked people who questioned his residential status. People who questioned him on Twitter were redirected to a hearing Hawley attended where Senators questioned the CEOs of Twitter and Facebook.
“One day after I exposed more liberal #BigTech censorship, some George Soros Democrat group is attacking me for – wait for it – building a new home in Ozark, MO. House is coming along great! We love Ozark. Dem losers, thanks for playing,” Hawley tweeted.
