According to Politico, President-elect Joe Biden has reportedly made his selection for whom he wants to lead the Pentagon: retired four-star General Lloyd Austin, the former commander of US Central Command.
Biden reportedly had narrowed his choices down to Austin, former Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, and Michèle Flournoy, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Strategy under President Bill Clinton and Under Secretary of Defense for Policy under President Barack Obama.
Since his retirement from the Army in 2016, Lloyd has served on the board of defense contractor Raytheon and steel manufacturer Nucor. He also works as an independent director on the board of Tenet Healthcare.
Lloyd graduated from West Point in 1975 and accepted a commission into the US Army. He spent the majority of his time split between assignments in the 82nd Airborne and the 10th Mountain Division. After a stint at the Pentagon, he took command of the 10th Mountain Division during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
