Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who incited an ongoing national protest against police abuse when he was filmed kneeling on George Floyd’s neck for eight minutes, killing him, has been charged with felony tax crimes, according to the Washington Post.
Chauvin and his wife were charged with failing to report more than $95,000 in income Chauvin earned by moonlighting as a security guard. They have each been charged with nine counts of felony tax evasion.
The charges, filed in Washington County District Court, specify that Chauvin and his wife underreported more than $464,000 in joint income from 2014 to 2019, which would have increased their state tax bill by more than $38,000.
Derek Chauvin is facing second-degree murder charges in connection with Floyd’s May 25th death. His wife filed for a divorce on May 29th, the day he was arrested.
