A week after ballots were cast, veteran Amy McGrath was declared the winner of the Kentucky Democratic Senate primary, setting her up as the challenger to republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in November’s election.
McGrath defeated her top primary challenger, state Rep. Charles Booker, in an unexpectedly tight race by a two percentage point margin, despite McGrath greatly out fundraising Booker.
McConnell retained his seat in the 2014 election, winning by a 14 point margin, but pundits have predicted a much closer contest this cycle, with some polling showing McGrath leading the race.
