The judge in the Derek Chauvin murder trial told the defense attorney that the calls from Democratic California Congresswoman Maxine Waters for protests in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota as the trial is put in the hands of the jury, CNN reports.
“I’ll give you that Congresswoman Waters may have given you something on appeal that may result in this whole trial being overturned,” Judge Peter Cahill told defense attorney Eric Nelson Monday.
Waters said she traveled to Minnesota to be in solidarity with the protesters seeking justice for George Floyd, the man Chauvin allegedly murdered when he was a police officer by kneeling on his back and neck for more than nine minutes.
“We’ve got to stay in the street and demand justice,” Waters said to reporters, according to video posted on social media. “We’re looking for a guilty verdict and we’re looking to see if all of the talk that took place and has been taking place after they saw what happened to George Floyd. If nothing does not happen, then we know that we got to not only stay in the street, but we have got to fight for justice.”
