One Marine is dead and eight are missing after a “training mishap” involving an amphibious assault vehicle off San Clemente Island, about 75 miles off the coast of San Diego in Southern California, NBC 7 San Diego reports.
During a Thursday evening training exercise, the AAV reported taking on water. The vehicle had 15 Marines and one sailor aboard.
Six of those on board were rescued, with one hospitalized in critical condition and one hospitalized in stable condition.
The USS John Finn, three U.S. Navy helicopters, multiple small boats from other Naval ships, a U.S. Coast Guard ship and a helicopter from Coast Guard Sector San Diego continue the search for the missing Marines.
