Haiti’s interim prime minister has made a formal request to the United States to have American troops on the ground on the island to protect Haiti’s infrastructure in the wake of the assassination of the country’s president.
“We definitely need assistance and we’ve asked our international partners for help,” Interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph told The Associated Press in an interview, declining to provide further details. “We believe our partners can assist the national police in resolving the situation.”
Seventeen suspects have been detained in the wake of the investigation of President Jovenel Moïse, who was shot in his house Thursday morning. His wife was wounded and later medivac’ed to Florida for medical treatment.
Earlier, the Haitian government had made a request to the US State Department to have FBI agents assist in the investigation of the assassination and members of the Department of Homeland Security to protect vital systems.
