With 13 members of the St. Louis Cardinals testing positive for coronavirus in the past week, Major League Baseball has canceled the team’s four game series against the Detroit Tigers, further scrambling the league’s schedule, the Washington Post reports.
Seven Cardinals players and six coaches have tested positive for the virus, meaning nearly a quarter of the players and more than half of the coaching staff have been infected. The entire team is self-isolating in a Milwaukee hotel after their series with the Brewers.
This is the second team to suffer an outbreak: 20 members of the Miami Marlins, including 18 players, have tested positive for the coronavirus, forcing the team to trade for players in order to fill out their roster for possible future games.
The league has warned partners that the season may be completely suspended depending on the continued spread of the virus. Broadcasting partners have been advised to have alternative programming available on short notice if games or the season are canceled.
