In the midst of a fight against a global coronavirus pandemic, President Joe Biden has recommitted American resources to fight HIV/AIDS, with a goal of reducing new infections by 75% by 2025 and 90% by 2030, Reuters reports.
Biden’s proposal would increase research funding, improve access to healthcare, and work to reduce racial disparities in access to care. “President Biden is honoring that commitment by releasing the new national HIV/AIDS strategy on World AIDS Day and providing a framework and a direction for the administration’s policies, research, programs and planning,” a senior administration official said.
More than 36 million people have died of HIV/AIDS worldwide, including more than 700,000 in the United States, since the disease was identified in 1981.
