This one is going to cause a lot of consternation for conservatives: A hunter in Alabama nabbed an 8-point buck during hunting season, only to find that it was a buck at all, but a transgender doe that had grown horns like a buck, the Gulfport Herald Sun reports.
Matt Kelley put the carcass on the skinning rack when he noticed it didn’t have any male genitalia. He notified the state’s Department of Conservation of the unique animal he found, and killed.
“A deer like this with hardened antlers will have testes inside the body cavity,” Chris Cook, the coordinator for the Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division’s Deer Program, said in the report. “They don’t have fully developed male or female organs. They may have external female organs, but they would have to have underdeveloped testes that were still large enough to produce enough testosterone to have that antler growth.”
Cook termed the deer’s condition “pseudohermaphrodism” and noted that he’s seen a number of cases of this in his career.
