Within hours of the launch of a British government website to sign up families to house incoming Ukrainian refugees, more than 25,000 households in the UK enrolled in the program called “Homes for Ukraine,” the Washington Post reports.
“The United Kingdom has a long and proud history of helping others in their hour of need and our new Homes for Ukraine scheme offers a lifeline to those who have been forced to flee,” Housing Minister Michael Gove said in a statement. “I’m asking people across our country who can provide a home for Ukrainians to consider being sponsors.”
Families hosting refugees receive a $450 monthly payment from the government, with a commitment to house a refugee family for at least six months or as long as you can.
