“Wildfires raged out of control across California overnight Tuesday, prompting evacuations and threatening homes north of San Francisco. The acrid smell of smoke hung over the San Francisco Bay Area early Wednesday morning and new evacuations were ordered in Vacaville, a city of about 100,000 in Solano County, as a series of fires threatened lives and homes. The LNU Lightning Complex, a series of small and major fires started by unusual summer lightning storms, had grown to 46,225 acres with zero containment as of Wednesday morning, said Robert Foxworthy, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry. About 1,900 homes are under threat of those blazes and about 50 have been destroyed, Mr. Foxworthy said. Evacuations were ordered throughout the night in Sonoma County, including the popular Russian River Valley. The county has been hit repeatedly by wildfires in recent years, as California’s fire seasons have grown bigger and deadlier” reports the Wall Street Journal.
