The New York Times reports that the Biden Administration will support the transfer of Soviet-made tanks to Ukraine by NATO allies to bolster the nation’s defenses against Russian invaders.
The plan would allow nations from the old Warsaw Pact that have Soviet-era tanks in their arsenal to move those vehicles to Ukraine, likely through Poland. The nations could then replenish their stockpile through purchases of tanks from other NATO members, likely with aid or discounts for making the donation to Ukraine.
The acceptance of the plan shows that Western leaders believe the war in Ukraine will continue for an extended period of time. Ukraine has been gaining ground in some areas as peace talks with the Kremlin continue.
